A Spoonful of Sugar

Julia’s House for Lost Creatures - Ben Hatke

Red-headed, high top-wearing Julia lives in a house that is carried around on the back of a turtle. Yet somehow, her life is too quiet. She fixes this by hanging out a sign, inviting “lost creatures” to come and stay. When the guests begin to overstay their welcome and wear on Julia’s nerves, she institutes a chore chart that allows peace to be restored to her small castle.

This picture book’s best features are the beguiling illustrations of non-threatening monsters and the heroine’s self-confidence. This book could easily be used to introduce the necessity of jobs in a primary grade classroom or a family with young children.
